MEET FELIX, OUR FUNDRAISING PHENOM

Fundraising Phenom Felix helps others obtain vital second opinions through the Lu Family Fund

I joined COLONTOWN 6 years ago as a caregiver for my wife Dianna. When I connected with the HAI Pump People group for liver mets, I started at the first post and read all the way up to the top, learning as much as I could from the experiences of all the other members in the group. Then I dug into the other groups. Eventually, COLONTOWN would be the greatest resource I had for research in dealing with this disease.

I had found Dr. Yuman Fong through friends in medicine prior to joining Colontown. Introducing him to fellow Colontownies was a contribution I’m proud to have made. After Dianna passed away, I wanted to further give back to the community that had helped us in so many ways. I created the Lu Family Fund to support COLONTOWN members, in particular through the Second Opinion Project.

I feel very strongly that stage IV colorectal cancer patients and their caregivers need to know about all their treatment options as soon as possible after diagnosis. Most stage IV crc patients are considered terminal by their care teams, and the standard of care is “chemo for life.” Some stage IV patients can benefit from more aggressive treatment, however; these patients can survive well past 5 years, and can even achieve a durable “no evidence of disease” response.

In most cases, patients need to seek out a second opinion to understand and access these more aggressive treatment options.

I’m proud that the Second Opinion Project has

approved more than 200 stage IV patients for financial assistance in obtaining critical second opinions. Dr. Fong had been our first second opinion, and seeing him changed everything for us. We had hope and a chance. Other patients deserve a similar chance, too.

Together, we can change not only outcomes for our stage IV “neighbors,” but also, perhaps, the standard of care for all stage IV CRC patients. That’s the goal!
